The act of reading proposes an indexicality, an interpretation of the external world where a line between points of reality can be drawn to elucidate meaning. We speak of reading texts, reading signs, reading between the lines, and reading out loud. In the appearing incoherence, inconsistencies, and idiosyncrasies brought together through the artistic mediums of painting and video—by A.3.Lingo and Sunday Lai, respectively—we see a doubling. What we see is first channelled through the artist as the medium, and only secondly, it is channelled through their practices. The repetition rife in their work moves not as metaphor but as a real attempt at being reality itself. They are recordings born of rituals crafted by the artists, and ritual recordings in their production method, that is, through habit. The seeming duality of the works, notably light and darkness, project a search for equitable balance, yet its imperative lies in its representation of the contexts in which experiential material is born from just these idiosyncrasies.
Two Readings by A.3.Lingo and Sunday Lai bring together dual artistic practices that interpret the signs in our world. Through meditation, Lingo paints records of her visions drawn from rural surroundings. Her twenty-two work series Free 22 is being presented in its entirety for the first time, and is a visual recording of her spiritual journey. The imagery and symbolism we see is unified on the pictorial plane through fragments of meditative visions, environmental experience, and personal introspection. In looking within, she seeks to find order through personal struggle and patterns in natural occurrences. Through observation, Lai makes digital recordings of momentary alignment in urban settings. Her new work Rebellious Beats is composed of recordings she made of flickering lights over the course of three years. In line with her previous video works, Lai finds electric eccentricities in everyday life. Moments of rupture, such as the flickering of lights and the sequenced opening of automatic doors, become moments of attunement in her eyes. In looking without, she seeks to find order through the editing and manipulation of recorded instances. By reading coincidence as signal and narrative, A.3.Lingo and Lai make magic with the material offered by Hong Kong.
A.3.Lingo is an artist and spiritual meditation practitioner. Through the observation of nature, her work is centred on the exploration of the self through memories, dreams, and mysteries. Since 2019, through various practice exercises, she has obtained subconscious images and output them with spontaneous self-taught painting. A.3.Lingo is the expression of an inner child that is shown in painting that images rebirth, purity, and a freedom from the constraints of time and space. In this dimension that is given to dreams, hopes and desires, she strives to release her emotions freely. She studied interior design at the Hong Kong Design Institute.
Sunday LAI's concept-led works are made by diversified methods and presentations. The mediums involved include performing art, video art, installation art and painting. She is sensitive to the city's inconspicuous yet subtle order, venting her desire for control through art making, trying to dominate the realities in a variety of ways, and paying attention to this world that continues to manipulate us (un)intentionally.
Born in Hong Kong in 1985, graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University in 2009, and graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago in 2018.
