"This is my last exhibition before I leave Hong Kong to study in the UK. Therefore, I selected a variety of works to make a summary. Some are more life-oriented and some are more abstract. I always believe that the works reflect what I usually think, see, what kind of person I am, and this exhibition describes me from the shallower to the deeper, from life to personal thoughts to personal feelings."
-- Lean

Lean’s photographs bare the innocence of a teenager but the distance and awareness of someone with far more lived years. One is drawn into the childlike world created by the artist, a world soft to the touch and tender, balanced with curiosity and honesty that embraces and upholds the spaces, objects and people she captures. While her works are polished, and the worlds inhabited seem pristine, Lean’s subjects are not immune to emotional and physical pain. What she shows is the resilience they embody as life gently leaves its imprints.

While the white filter and framing of her photos can be easily misinterpreted as ‘soft’, Lean’s images turn vulnerabilities and softness into resistance, commanding both the camera lens and the viewer. She conveys her profound admiration for girls and women, especially the one’s closest to her, her family members and best friends, through image-making. The changing elasticity of the skin, the wetness of wounds and orifices, the directness of the model’s gaze, and their ownership of the photographer’s gaze, are the very expressions of their great inner strength and inherent wisdom despite their years.

Lean

This exhibition is presented in partnership with Women's Festival.
